Create Your Own Game Board: With PowerPoint

When you think of board games, what comes to mind? Maybe old favorites like Clue® or Risk®, or the perennial favorite, Monopoly®? Have you thought about creating a board game to be used in a learning program? What if you could create that board game using PowerPoint? “Wait,” you might be saying, “PowerPoint has all those boring bullets and clip art.” Most people don’t know the true power of PowerPoint, and even fewer use all of its design functions. In this hands-on course, you will build four board games using new ways to change images, draw lines, use the Selection Panel and Format Panel, and export images that can be used in an authoring tool. You will be amazed at what PowerPoint can do to enliven your eLearning programs.

First Game Board

This is the first game board, using an image and building a game board over it using PowerPoint shapes. All of the images used in the course are in the Game Board Toolkit. You can use a screen capture tool to copy the images and paste into your own PowerPoint Slides. The Resources at the end include links to learn how to use the PowerPoint Panels.

2nd Game Board Using Shapes

PowerPoint has many shapes that can easily be used to create a game board. Squares, rectangles, the 6-sided Sextagon, and others. The great part of this is you can also add numbers or instructions to the game board to emphasize how the game is played.

Game Board Using The Scribble Tool

Many game boards are winding pathways through a scene. So, how can you create this pathway? How about making it three different colors and add numbers? This is what you will learn in this section.

Editing an Existing Game Board

What can you do if you find this great-looking game board in a place like Freepik.com or Pixabay.com? PowerPoint lets you edit this image in any way you want by using shaping and coloring techniques again. Watch this example and then try it yourself, OR pick an image you like.

3D Graphic Fun

PowerPoint allows you to use 3D Images. You can also add animation and links to other slides to make this an interactive game board without an authoring tool. Watch the demo and then try to build a 3D activity yourself.
