What is gamification?

Gamification is a way to turn a routine process into a game, like scoring points for specific successful actions, introducing competitions, ratings, difficulty levels, and so on. The purpose of these gamification strategies is to increase the involvement of participants and motivate them to achieve goals.

The term “gamification” first appeared in 2008, and today, gamification is used by such well-known companies as  Amazon, United Airlines, Microsoft, Target, Siemens, and many others.

Gamification is behavioral design; it's the use of game elements and game mechanics in a non-game context.

Circle of Focus

The Five Centers of Focus (Service, Quality, People, Finance, and Growth) is a universal concept that applies equally well to all types of service and industrial organizations. It provides the foundation for setting organizational goals and direction to achieve service and operational excellence.

By aligning your department into operational Centers of Focus, you provide the foundation for setting organizational goals and direction for service and operational excellence that the majority of employees will accept.

Introduction to SMART Framework

The SMART philosophy holds that goals should be specific. Vague or general goals are ineffective and unclear. Specific goals make expectations clear to employees. A specific goal will answer:

  • What you want to accomplish?
  • What is the purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal?
  • Who is involved?
  • Where will it be accomplished?
  • Are there any requirements or constraints?

Introduction to KPIs

In its simplest form, a KPI is a type of performance measurement that helps you understand how your HR or L&D department is performing.

A good KPI should act as a compass, helping you and your team understand whether you’re taking the right path toward your learning and ultimately business goals.

To be effective, a KPI must:

  • Be well-defined and quantifiable
  • Be communicated to all stakeholders
  • Be crucial to achieving your goal
  • Be relevant to your program.

Introduction to OKRs

The OKR methodology is a simple process of setting and aligning company and team goals (Objectives) and connecting each Objective with 3-5 measurable results (Key Results) to measure progress.

Objectives are supported by your weekly activities and initiatives (plans).

The Million-Dollar Question

The million-dollar question for all organizations is how to get employees motivated to learn.

Gamified and game-based learning:

  • Triangulate three primary factors: motivation, ability level, and triggers.
  • Cause people to become completely involved in an activity for its own sake.
Drive emotions, build loyalty, and create character.
  • Increases interest and engagement, and it makes learning “fun” which saves time and money.

Gamified and game-based learning is the best strategy to design defining moments to create meaningful learning experiences.
