The Future of Learning Is Being Built Right Now
Jun 26, 2026I've been thinking a lot about AI lately.
Not because I'm trying to master every new tool that comes along. Frankly, that's impossible. By the time you learn one platform, three more have been released! What I've been thinking about is something much bigger than the tools themselves.
How do we, as learning professionals, make sure we're shaping the future instead of simply reacting to it?
I've watched our profession evolve for a long time. I've seen us move from binders to eLearning, from classrooms to virtual learning to hybrid, from overhead projector transparencies to PowerPoint to immersive experiences. Every shift brought excitement, a healthy dose of skepticism, and plenty of people predicting they knew exactly what the future would look like.
This time feels different, though. The pace of change is extraordinary. Every morning seems to bring another announcement, another capability, another reason to wonder if we're keeping up.
Maybe keeping up isn't the goal.
Perhaps the better question is whether we're staying focused on what has always mattered.
When someone asks me what skill learning professionals should develop next, I don't think my answer is going to be, "Learn Prompt #247." Yes, we should absolutely experiment with AI. Yes, we should understand what these tools can do. But I also believe the people who will make the biggest impact over the next five years will be those who continue asking thoughtful questions, designing meaningful experiences, and helping people solve real problems.
Technology has always changed. People haven't changed nearly as much.
Our learners still want to feel successful. They still want learning that respects their time. They still want experiences that are relevant, engaging, and immediately useful. AI can help us create those experiences faster, but it can't decide which experiences are worth creating in the first place.
That's still our job.
It's also one of the reasons the entire Event Team, along with Jonathan and I are so excited about GamiCon ATX 2026. We are not creating another conference where people spend two days taking notes and leave with a bag full of handouts. We want to create a place where learning professionals can roll up their sleeves, bring a real challenge, and spend time building something that matters.
Imagine spending two days surrounded by people who are asking the same questions you are. Imagine testing ideas, experimenting with AI, exploring gamification and game-based learning, receiving feedback, and leaving with a prototype instead of just another notebook full of ideas.
That's the experience we're building in Austin.
Over the next 80 days, I'll be sharing some of the questions we're exploring as we prepare for GamiCon ATX. Some weeks we'll talk about AI. Other weeks we'll explore motivation, game-based learning, rapid prototyping, storytelling, and the skills I believe will matter most in the years ahead.
I'd love for this to be a conversation, not a monologue.
So let me leave you with a question. What's one skill you believe will become more valuable because of AI, not less?
Hit reply and let me know. I read every response, and I suspect your answer will spark ideas for others in our community as well.
Until next time...
Keep playing, keep experimenting, and keep building. The future of learning isn't waiting for us. It's being built right now!!!
